Super Eagles’ AFCON Qualifying Campaign: What Tactical Shift Does Peseiro’s Successor Need?

Super Eagles’ AFCON Qualifying Campaign: What Tactical Shift Does Peseiro’s Successor Need?

Coaching in Nigeria has come a long way since Finidi George stepped down in June 2024 after a draw against South Africa in the World Cup qualifying and a loss to Benin Republic.

The Portuguese international, José Peseiro, had left before him following the Super Eagles 2023 AFCON final defeat to Ivory Coast. Despite being appointed in January 2025, Eric Chelle, the man who has taken charge of AFCON 2025, instability persists.

The next test will be the AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau in Group L. While the general rule across most groups sends the top two through, Group L is different: co-hosts Tanzania are already guaranteed their spot at the finals in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, meaning only the single highest-ranked team among Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau will claim qualification. Matches run across three windows, 21 September to 6 October 2026, 9 to 17 November 2026, and 22 to 30 March 2027, leaving zero margin for slow starts.

While supporters get to know line-ups, some will go through all top Nigerian betting sites promo codes here before making their Super Eagles bet. But don’t let sentiment get in the way of the facts: Chelle’s team is better, but remains unfocused in big games.

From Peseiro’s pragmatism to Finidi’s failure: analysing the tactical inheritance

Peseiro’s AFCON 2023 system was a 3-4-3 which morphed into a 5-4-1 without possession. It played a vital role in keeping the box safe, squeezing space and providing counterattacking opportunities to the forwards.

The system brought Nigeria to the final, but Ivory Coast exposed its weaknesses. Nigeria found it hard to hold on to the ball, ease pressure or create sustained attacks when the hosts turned the ball over to the wings.

There was no solution to Finidi’s spell. They exposed poor, slow circulation and lack of spacing in the South Africa draw and were weak on transition defending and pressing in the Benin loss.

Chelle took over a talented, but disjointed team and implemented a diamond formation (4-4-2) which is similar to a 4-3-1-2. The coach was all about attack, and managed 14 goals before the AFCON 2025 semi-final.

Nigeria emerged as the tournament’s most prolific forward-going side before dropping a semi-final to Morocco on penalties, and then beating Egypt in a shoot-out to win the bronze medal.

But the World Cup play-off loss to DR Congo on penalties raised a concern, however, that when games close in on Nigeria, they can be reactive, narrow and rely on moments.

The core conundrum: defensive solidity vs. attacking freedom

Chelle has no place in restoring the low block of Peseiro, as Nigeria’s depth must be free. He must also not mistake his forward running for aggression. The diamond is superior and holds two strikers together, but it may show the flanks and require full-backs to go to the ground for recovery.

The AFCON 2027 qualifiers are best on a 4-2-3-1. Two midfielders can stop opponents from transitioning, wingers can exploit tight opposition, and a number 10 can assist Osimhen.

The shape can be 4-4-2 when pressing or 3-2-5 when in possession, when one full-back moves. Labels are secondary to principles: coordinated pressure, secure rest defence and occupation of all five attacking lanes.

Unlocking the midfield: finding the creative spark

The question of whether or not Alex Iwobi should play deep or as a No. 10 is no longer a topic of discussion. He is best suited as a mobile playmaker, dropping beside the holder, taking the on-the-half-turn move and moving into the left half space. Staging him too far away from goal means he’s not as influential, and staging him too close makes him easier to mark.

Running power and coverage can be provided by Frank Onyeka or Raphael Onyedika; Wilfred Ndidi can anchor the structure. Against deep blocks, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru provides late box entries. Nigeria would be allowed to play a stable partnership behind Iwobi, rather than passing out too quickly towards anyone forward.

Beyond Osimhen: building a multi-threat attack

Victor Osimhen is the benchmark as he has pressing, movement and penalty-box power. But AFCON 2025 proved the fact of sharing responsibility. Lookman was the creative threat and Akor Adams the physical threat as well as link play and intelligent movement.

Next, there will be more width and rotation. Lookman needs to run into the box from the left flank, and it must be a full back to run wide. Samuel Chukwueze is capable of ghosting opponents on the right and moving to the middle on the left. The profiles of selected Adams, Victor Boniface or Terem Moffi vary. The forward should allow a back to drop as they attack another forward to make combinations rather than tight central players. Nigeria will have to create opportunities for themselves rather than just come up with the crosses or stand out individual brilliance.

The path to AFCON 2027: personnel and priorities

It is the job of the full-backs to be decisive in the game. Briefly, the strengths of the three are: Bright Osayi-Samuel for his speed and directness; Zaidu Sanusi for his natural width; and Bruno Onyemaechi for his conservative option. Ola Aina is a variable performer on either flank when healthy and fit, he can be useful, but Chelle must have reliable options on both sides.

The defence’s organiser was off in December 2025, when William Troost-Ekong retired internationally. Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi are thus required to have a solid relationship, while the likes of young centre-backs are to be introduced with purpose. Nigeria needs to improve their set-pieces play and not settle for second best when they lead. Consistency of selection in September-October and November will be critical.

What next? Defining the profile for the Super Eagles coach

The foreign vs. local debate is less important than competence. Chelle has international experience in Africa, tactical bravery, and a track record of enhanced attacking output. His new contract through 2030 provides continuity, and his involvement with the under-23 levels will enhance the feeder system for the Super Eagles.

Evolution has to come from continuity. Chelle needs attacking play to be more fluid, and a tighter succession and game management in defence. The NFF shall organise camps, timely trips, take adequate care of welfare and protect the participants from selection interference. Football in Nigeria can no longer afford to take qualification for the World Cup for granted, as they failed to qualify the last two times.

However, Nigeria will have to work hard to make the top of Group L if they want to be there. The difference now is from football full of emotion and transition to controlled aggression – press together, protect counterattacks, create from various zones, play smart with leads. Chelle sets those habits, Peseiro’s replacement can create a permanent Super Eagles brand.
