The Senator representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District, Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) for the 2027 general election in Nasarawa State.
He was elected during the party’s special delegates primary election held on Saturday in Lafia through affirmation by delegates drawn from across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.
The congress was convened to fill the vacancy created by the withdrawal of the former candidate, Dr Mohamed Auwal, who also serves as the Nasarawa State Chairman of APM.
Speaking after his affirmation, Onawo thanked the party members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to run an issues-based and inclusive campaign focused on security, infrastructural development, agriculture, education, and job creation.
“I accept this nomination with humility and a strong commitment to serve the people of Nasarawa State. Together with APM, we will build a state where every citizen has opportunity and hope,” he said.
The Senator said that he was the most experienced of all the candidates contesting for the governorship of Nasarawa state at the moment, having served in the state legislature as a member, the House of Representatives and now as a senator.
Onawo explained that he came with political experience, legislative exposure, and a strong grassroots structure, especially in Nasarawa South, saying he is a credible alternative for the people in 2027.
“As a two-term House of Representatives member, Former Speaker of the state House of Assembly and now a Senator, I have built alliances across the state and beyond; therefore, I will be the next governor of the state by the grace of God,” he stressed.
He promised a people-centred government focused on delivering prosperity to every household, building on his previous and present scorecards.
The Senator expressed optimism that APM would clinch the governorship of the state if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducts a free, fair and credible election in 2027.
Earlier in remarks, Auwal, who doubles as the chairman of the Allied Progressive Movement (APM), said he decided not to step down from his governorship ambition in the interest of party unity and to support a candidate with broader reach ahead of the 2027 elections.
The APM State Chairman described Onawo as a grassroots politician with the experience and capacity to lead the state, adding that the party is ready to mobilise across all 13 local government Areas for the success of the party in 2027.
